Operation Boycott Basel

boycott_basel

Unused invitations, discarded.

Art Basel Miami Beach is considered to be the world’s largest art event and Artlurker (not to toot our own horn) is considered to be Miami’s most prolific art publication. In contradiction to a function of Artlurker as a resource to find out what to do to and where to go, and in contrast to Art Basel Miami Beach 2008 when we posted no less than 4 times a day, this year, spurred by a general disdain for consumerism and well-to-do out-of-towners cavorting like pigs in a stunning display of wasteful opulence that has little to do with culture, Artlurker writers Tom and Victor made a pact with each other to see as little as possible. Unavoidably, due to prior commitments, it was impossible for either to see nothing, nevertheless, their tangible dissent gave rise to Operation Boycott Basel, a competition positioned to test who could see the least whilst still functioning as a reputable arts journalist.

Everyday, each awoke with the intention of seeing nothing, absolutely nothing. Turning down invitations, avoiding crowds and busying themselves with watching reruns of Lost and Jersey Shore, Tom and Victor spent the majority of their time eloping with tourists, committing themselves to work for shows they could not leave, and longing for the sweet comfort of a deserted island in the south pacific, or the bustling excitement of a summer on the Jersey Shore, pumping fists and drinking Jägerbombs with “Snooky.”

In entering into this competition they risked not only their reputations, but also the respect of many who have come to look upon the fair and its associated events with ardor. However, bravely inviting the choleric vexations of those who might spring to Miami’s defense, they embarked with righteous indignation upon what would likely sound the death knell of their short but illustrious careers.

Here follows a shabby run down of this years events together with tallies of both writers’ attendances.

One tick = one attendance. Each tick counts for the number of points detailed in the subheading. The writer with the most points loses.

While both under viewed America’s most important art happening way more than either reasonably should, only Tom succeeded in avoiding Miami Beach altogether!

Because the fair has been good for Miami, this exercise might seem like an arrogant slap in the face of progress, however, the pair wish to make it clear that they do not hate Art Basel Miami Beach, nor want it to go away, they just totally resent the assumption that they should care about it.

Happily, going out with no sort of expectation to see anything actually made Basel week – typically a stressful gnarl of networking and taxi rides – easier to swallow, and in the end a more much more enjoyable and rewarding experience as the impossibility of attending every event was already quantified.

Although each ultimately failed to ‘Boycott Basel’ altogether neither regrets seeing what they did. Art Basel Miami Beach is known for great art parties, and this year certainly didn’t disappoint, as far as art goes however, they’re not really in a position to comment[.]

Tom – I have to rat you out! I saw you on the roof of the Adjust Gallery to witness the Jet-pack helo craziness. You need to add the additional 4 points, even though you may not remember riding the scissor lift to the roof.

Dang, Brook you’re absolutely correct! I guess I lose by default. I wonder what else happened that night. Does queuing for a half hour for ribs that I never got count for anything?

UPDATE: I also went to the NWSA student show “NWSA Untitled.” My new score is 28. My life is a sham.
