Though I am all for art for art’s sake, may I remind you that without the rich collector – the type that purchases for investment purposes or to appear ‘cultural’ and ‘trendy’ or who may actually love art – artists would starve. Have you ever heard of a patron for poets? In many ways, rich patrons probably support your blog too because they will want to appear art savvy. As a writer who has to make a living by writing about anti-money laundering and counter terrorist financing issues instead of focusing on my love of fiction or poetry, I’m tired of artists getting on their high horse about the commercial art world. I hope one day the commercial world will catch up with the poetry world because maybe then I can actually make a living out of poetry. Having said that, I hate what I term ‘bank art’ – the kind you see hanging in banks. Yes, there are plenty of annoying things about Art Basel. But there are plenty of good things as well. You can’t have it all.
