Conventional wisdom says whatever happens at a convention, strays at the convention. Typically, the face-time 1% business 99% schmooze.

I think most people fail to consider what "Convention" is beyond the mere glance at its static display of institutional Phenomenon or background props and the coping of that familiar space. The idea of "Convention" comes alive when you participate in any one of the subsequent events / happenings or lectures / discussions i.e. My Barbarian, The Salon, and other scheduled events. Even this blog can be seen as an extension of "Convention" in that it is not about a "Convention", it's about the conversations that arise from the phenomenon of institution.

ARTLURKER has been assimilated.

Q: "For low income visitors who live and work in surrounding North Miami who are curious enough to pay to set foot in a museum?"

A: Unless things have changed, residents of North Miami get free admission to moca. They are the silent tax base.

And while we are at it, who wants to start a list of miami artists / taxpayers to request honorary lifetime admission to every local public subsidized museum?

All we have here is a show almost equivalent in scope to a traveling exhibition, which is ironically grounded by either a lack of connections or outside interest.

"In what way is this type of “conventional” subversiveness going to change the museum experience?"
For who exactly? For low income visitors who live and work in surrounding North Miami who are curious enough to pay to set foot in a museum? For the students herded through on their obligatory annual museum field trip? For the under funded local artists who’s work has to be twisted in order to fit the oppressive agenda of such shows? Or perhaps for delusional curators (plural because this exhibition is hardly an isolated event: theanyspacewhatever, Whitney Biennial 2008, etc) salivating over the prospect of “the look of sociology” to validate their second-status syndrome as the primary movers and shakers in art?

While this sociological exercise could be a good opportunity to gather numerous like-minded art lovers, say, in a desert, it doesn’t work so well at MOCA. Anyone versed in art, art history, art theory, etc. takes one look at a bunch of chairs made into a gathering place with museum guards breathing quietly over their shoulder and easily sees this as a very “conventionalized” curatorial challenge of institutional ho-hum. It has the problem of a typical Liam Gillick show - all “mixer” and no “punch”.
